This game was created with BGT, so you will need to install bgt. Get it at blastbay.com. THis game is really fun. The readme file tells you all about it. For some reason, some people say it doesn't work on their computers, but don't let that put you off from the game; it is great, and so many people like it that you basically forget about the few who say it doesn't work. GO to http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/sidescrollersetup.exe
and download!

Post 2 by SilverLightning (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 10:50:32

Can you give us a description? What is the story line? What kind of game is it? What do you do? give us some details other than that some people say it doesn't work. then maybe I'll go and get it.

Post 3 by midnight sun (you can't catch me, i'm the palobread man) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 12:38:36

exactly what i was thinking. i get quite lazy when it comes to downloading and installing stuff, unless i am motivated to do it for one reason or the other. so a description of the game could help.

Post 4 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 14:18:08

This game is set where you have been kidnapped. You have to fight your way through 8 levels of craziness to get out. YOu have 4 weapons when you start out, which you can use to defend yourself, and there are lots of hazards and other things, including pits, cutting blades, boulders, fireballs, and other things. There are a lot of sound effects, and there are 5 music tracks to select from so you can choose one that suits you best.

Post 5 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 17:57:29

So this requires that the user purchase the game toolkit for developers? As a developer, if I were going to write games, I'd most certainly pay for the license, but users? You ought to just bundle the interpreter into your installer and charge your users for the game rather than have them buy what amounts to an SDK.

Post 6 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 19:24:50

You don't need to purchase it. U only need to download it, and it is free, and then you can run the game.

Post 7 by SexySquirrel (I can't call it a day til I enter the zone BBS) on Monday, 21-Jun-2010 22:36:58

Sounds exciting! I think I will try it.

Post 8 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Tuesday, 22-Jun-2010 13:13:45

Hmm, maybe when I'm done with school crap...I sware, I can't wait for class to start in less than two weeks; maybe then things won't be so hectic. :)

Post 9 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 22-Jun-2010 15:45:06

Hmm I see that now. I still say there may be a way for you to license it and sell your game, though sometimes that's more work than the money you earn from it. Just a consideration for you though, us developers gotta eat somehow, and that includes you, despite what the blinkosphere thinks about all developers should donate everything.

Post 10 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 22-Jun-2010 15:54:14

Well according to Philip Bennefall the requirement that BGT bein installed to actually run the game only exists because right at the moment the toolkit is only in Beta testing, which currently only means open source projects. Once everything's ironed out BGT developers will be able to create actual executable games that don't need the toolkit to be installed in order to run. This is just a temporary thing. And Key was Full, I keep meaning to post this on either Blastbay or audiogames.net, but the menu doesn't appear to work anymore. That is to say that when I hit an arrow nothing is spoken. This is the only instance I've found where this happens so I don't think it's a problem with Sapi itself.

Post 11 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 22-Jun-2010 16:22:51

hmm, I don't know why this would be so, because it works perfectly fine for so many other people.

Post 12 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 23-Jun-2010 0:59:06

Everything works fine here.

The only issue I seem to have is when BGT decides to crash right in the middle of a level.

The game play itself is nice and challenging.

I managed to make it to the third level.

That reminds me, wouldn't it make sence to have a splash sound when you kill the enemy on that level?

They are landing in water after all

Post 13 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Wednesday, 23-Jun-2010 5:04:55

That's true. That would make sense after all.

Post 14 by midnight sun (you can't catch me, i'm the palobread man) on Wednesday, 23-Jun-2010 11:05:02

are you telling me we have a game that's good and challenging, maybe with good sound effects, and free at the same time? that's not often seen. lol

Post 15 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Wednesday, 23-Jun-2010 14:31:56

It's free at the moment, but whether or not it'll continue to be once BGT is officially released is probably still up in the air. It all depends on what Key was Full decides to do. Of course he might be financially forced to make it freeware since the Pro version of BGT is going to cost around 700 dollars, where as the Light version will be sixty or so. Actually I'm pretty sure he's already preordered it, which was how he was able to compile the game into an actual .exe file. Otherwise he would have had to zip everything into a .zip file and you'd have to just run the .bgt file in order to play it. I'll probably wait until I've preordered it to release the game I'm currently working on. And in any case it isn't even close to being finished yet.

Post 16 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 24-Jun-2010 9:43:43

I didn't preorder it. I didn't compile it. I just made an installer for it. The installer actually will launcht he bgt file. The game is not in EXE. And I will keep it free unless I get enough money, and the chances of that are 1 in 250. By the way, version 4.3 is the latest version. It has cool cutscenes and I have already gotten the game to level 9, for those of you who have complteded it. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battlezoneSetup.exe

Post 17 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 24-Jun-2010 9:48:21

I just downloaded it to hear the new death cutscenes. Funny certainly but the synthe voices don't sit quite right with me. But I suppose you did the best with what you had to work with, and I must admit it's a nice job. The game I'm working on will use mostly synthe voices admittedly but mainly because the enemies you'll fight are robots. Actually I've still sort of at a loss as to what I should tackle next, now that I've got an ambience and an intro playing. I know basiccally what I want to do but deciding what I should work on next is proving tricky. And then of course I have to figure out how to do it.

Post 18 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 24-Jun-2010 12:25:17

If you need help, I will gladly help you with your game. If you need help with any problems i coding, or you have ideas on what you want to do but don't know how to trasnlate them into code I could help with that too. You could almost call me an old hand lol. But just give me an email, or a yoohoo on the blastbay forum or something and I'll be there.

Post 19 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 24-Jun-2010 12:27:34

Will do. Right now I'm trying to gather up the best sound effects for what I need. It's going to be a simple game but hopefully not too easy. It's based on an old Atari game and those could actually be surprisingly challenging.

Post 20 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 25-Jun-2010 11:20:18

I made a new version, well actually a bunch of new versions. The latest version is v5.0, which can be found at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe

Post 21 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 13:30:28

Going to check it out now, and going to check out the kit as well from Blast Day. I'm a programmer; self taught, but...

Post 22 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 13:36:28

Slight correction. It's Blastbay, not Blast Day. LOL. B instead of D and all one word. But the kit definitely seems to be worthwhile. I have absolutely no programming knowledge whatsoever and, while it has been slow I am definitely beginning to get the hang of at least the basic functions of BGT, to the point where I am, albeit slowly, working on a game of my own. Nothing on the scale of Battlezone but I'm sure I'll get to that point someday.

Post 23 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 14:54:59

LOL, sorry about the typo...It's been a long, long, long day, and it ain't over yet. Tried the game, and so far I have one, no two, comments. First, I personally would prefer a way to turn off the background music. I hate using background music when I'm just trying out a game, and 2nd, I think the keys for catching falling items would be better placed closer together. There simply isn't enough time in desktop mode to hear the sound, figure out which side; (using speakers as I don't have headphones that work), find the right key and press it. Just two ideas. I think I can get use to the key structure; (especially now that I've switched to LT mode), but the background music is a pain!!! Especially when my husband/anyone wants my attention and I can't hardly hear over it...Volume control at least?

Post 24 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 15:44:10

I think I'll add a completely turn the music off option in the next version.

Post 25 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 15:47:26

Actually Cattleya, there is a volume control for the music. Page Up and Page Down will increase or decrease the music volume. I always turn it down, particularly since for some reason I can't get speach in the main menu. Everything else works but not that.

Post 26 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 20:18:26

I released version 5.1 which has a new option in the change background music option that turns off all the music. Get it at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe

Post 27 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 21:56:42

My bad. I found the volume notes in the read me after I posted. LOL, well, no one is perfect. :) I have more suggestions, but not sure how much you really want to hear them. :) Anyways, just a few? Save game feature? Remember settings capability; (music selection, mode, ETC)? I'm not sure if these are programmable in what your using; (I've never used it for programming), but I hope so...I hate starting every session from the beginning...Or again am I missing something?

Post 28 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 22:24:28

MAYBEE A TEXT FILE CONTAINING SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
LVL1 HEALTH=250 AMO=25
THAT THE GAME WOULD PARS WHEN LOADING THE TEXTFILE; JUST A THOUGHT

Post 29 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 22:29:01

GAME IS WELL PROGRAMED BUT STUPID.

Post 30 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 22:30:25

GAME IS WELL PROGRAMMED BUT STUPID. OK, long intro, and the bonus objects get picked up with the F keys. why not do it the way Q9 did, where you used left and right aro to pick up a bonus item? stupid.

Post 31 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 26-Jun-2010 22:31:58

not even random levels! in rat attack, there's a random number of level's every time you start the game. in old battlezone, there's always 10 levels(11 counting the boss level) but come on. please.

Post 32 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 5:43:12

Billyboy, all th elevels are randomized, though there isn't a random, number, of levels, q9 didn't have random levels and you don't call it stupid. Bonus catching with the f-keys is hard, that's the point of it. Savegame features I on't think I will be able to do it until Philip makes anINI processor. Settings changes same, not until ini proccessor is implemented. And Bill, if all you have to say is that my game is stupid, don't say it here.

Post 33 by billkd (Account disabled) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 7:25:39

well, switch to auto it! that has ini processing and text file processing as well as networking support. and I guess you could use that COM audio hunk-o-junk.

Post 34 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 9:53:58

My my, aren't we cheerful? I agree with some of your suggestions, at least as far as the save game feature, and while I definitely don't agree with the way items are collected (although I'll freely admit that I've more or less worked out a strategy for it), in no way would I call the game stupid. Far from it. As for KeyWasFull's choice of utility, Billkd you need to keep in mind that BGT is only in Beta testing right now, so not all the features Philip has planned for it are implemented, much less working properly. So don't be so quick to dump on it. Sure it's going to have its limitations even when it's "completed" but Battlezone is proof that it's a powerful utility even now. As for saving games and settings I daresay Philip does plan to have that implemented before the utility is officially released. As for Auto It, I'm no real programmer but I've heard nothing but contempt from most of the programmers I've talked to about it.

Post 35 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 10:18:08

I'd rather Microsoft over Autoit; and excuse me if I spelled it wrong. I haven't checked out the BGT IDE to know how limited it is right now, but I do like the game...Even if I haven't gotten past the 3rd level yet. LOL. I think your doing a great job.

Post 36 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 10:19:20

Oh, and meant to add. The laptop keys actually make it easier on a desktop computer. :) You just have to position your hands correctly.

Post 37 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 10:48:38

I've more or less gotten the hang of the desktop layout, although I do tend to wait until there aren't any other distractions before I do my item gathering. This does mean that I tend to miss out on time bonuses but ah well. It works for me.

Post 38 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 27-Jun-2010 23:43:07

LOL, what ever works. :)

Post 39 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 28-Jun-2010 4:59:44

This is sort of cheating, but what I do is use a little program called JoyToKey.

It allows you to map the keys on the keyboard to a joystick.

It comes in really useful when fighting the first boss cause I can use the sword much faster than any human should.

To give you an idea of how fast, I can make the normal gun sound like the machine gun.

It's also really cool when playing Dark Destroyer.

Post 40 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Monday, 28-Jun-2010 11:40:18

Hmm, I'll have to look it up. I've been looking for a PC Game Controller; (I know they exist our neighbor has one), but I can't find them anywhere, and even when I do find one...Most games don't seem to support them. So, this idea may work. :)

Post 41 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Wednesday, 30-Jun-2010 8:49:36

Post 42 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Thursday, 01-Jul-2010 3:25:27

and what are we supposed to do if blades are spinning right over a pit? Since we'll get cut with them if we jump, and we're supposed to jump over the pits, the only way out is to fall in and lose a life. Is there another option?

Post 43 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 01-Jul-2010 13:52:47

No, and that's one thing that makes me glad the game is still and will probably remain freeware. That's one thing I definitely feel shouldn't be allowed to continue. If and when I develop my own serious games that's one ting I will definitely try to make sure of, that if we have traps like blades and pits, that one is reasonably far away from another so that it's less likely you'll blunder into it while avoiding the one. Why should we be forced to deliberately lose a life just to get a new level layout?

Post 44 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 02-Jul-2010 17:19:45

It should be easy enough to ensure there is enough distance...But, that doesn't mean it is always done. I've run into the blade issue, and it's mighty frustrating.

Post 45 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Friday, 02-Jul-2010 20:46:12

That it is. And the boulders are even worse sometimes since you can jump one of those and hit a blade. Of course you have a little more leeway with boulders ironically since they're moving, which means therefore that you don't actually have to jump quite so far avoid them and if necessary you can take a few steps back the way you came to give yourself a little more room to move.

Post 46 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 02-Jul-2010 22:16:13

Sounds frustrating. I must admit I haven't played it yet.

Post 47 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 03-Jul-2010 11:21:27

It can be. The blades I think are what I find most frustrating of all, not so much by themselves bt when there's one right next to a pit it can get nervous.

Post 48 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 03-Jul-2010 13:10:13

I have released version 6.0. I have added in the right control key for accessing the shop, after a number of complaints on klango that they didn't like it, and have slightly lessened the pit-blade issue. ALso changed the pitch of the sounds for each item so you can hear when two of them are close to each other easier, and added in the complete level 10 instead of a test boss option. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
Enjoy it, and BIll, I will never go back to autoIt.

Post 49 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Sunday, 04-Jul-2010 16:26:05

What with having the three-day weekend and all, I've got to say I've enjoyed your game very much.
I'm not the harsh game critic some are, because I didn't get into audio games till the last couple years, and at that I'm pretty recreational and not serious about it. So I've worked my way up to Level four but haven't beat it.
I particularly like that your enemies in the game can fall into pits as well as I can, unlike Q9 which I tried: there they always escape. As to the jumping across and there are spinning blades, I wonder if that's a timing thing? I'll have to try that more.
Just like any combat scenario, Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, you want to kill off all your enemies before negotiating tough terrain in this case pits and blades. Any reason not to be running? The walking is just too slow for a lot of things I think.

Post 50 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 04-Jul-2010 23:06:00

Walking is good for one of the strategies I employ in the first boss level, but other than that no, running is better, and jumping even more so, because you get higher time bonuses the faster you complete a level.

Post 51 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 05-Jul-2010 12:58:11

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
You'll all be happy to know that the link above was for battle zone 6.4! This new version has a whole slew of new slew of features to check out!
Fixed: teleporters pause the blades so that you don't get cut up if a teleporter is right under a blade.
Worked even more on pit and blade configurations so that they would be farther away from each other.

Changes
Enemy death sounds pan correctly as you move
ENow, enemy can get hit by boulders.
You can have now 18 armor, but enemies now hit harder as the levels go up!
Added a full command summary in the readme file
In the street levels, 2 and 4, boulders are now acatually motorcycles. They work exactly the same way as boulders.

Additions
Cut scene for when you die by a blade!
Broken: Evade blades has been broken because I will be adding an evade blades item to inventory soon. Think of the item that just does nothing as a fake bonus item right now lol

And more stuff that I forgot! Just check out the game and you'll see all the changes! This is a huge release by the way. Lots of little fixes as well.

Post 52 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Monday, 05-Jul-2010 14:07:32

Nice. Seems more difficult to play, though maybe it's just me today. That's not a complaint, after all, it's ... a game, and the challenge is nice. I gotta say the panning of the death sounds is cool. Still trying to figure out if better to play Rambo or stealth as strategy, though I've seen how you can make monsters fall in the pits. Is it my imagination or are they immune to blades? Maybe that's part of them being shorter than I / the comments on fireballs.

Post 53 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 05-Jul-2010 17:10:17

They are immune to blades. I always play rambo, and I don't even know what you mean by stealth. I just go out and destroy everything in my way with the sword, while jumping and avoiding moving and unmoving obstacles, to get the highest time bonus possible.

Post 54 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Tuesday, 06-Jul-2010 11:24:26

Sounds fun but I don't want to download another language package. Truthfully, I am enjoying learning autoit. Maybe I'll grab the next verssion because it sounds worth it.

Post 55 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 06-Jul-2010 12:49:00

I enjoyed learning autoIt as well. What I didn't enjoy was trying to make programs with it. And I don't even understand the whole thing about gui modes or whatever it talks about in the gui reference.

Post 56 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 06-Jul-2010 23:27:20

Stealth is where you try and hide / jump out on your enemy. I often run out there and drop a booby trap, then run back to the left-most wall, shoot out a couple of them as they come in, and hit the final ones. Then I can easily jump motorcycles and the like and then navigate the obstacles.
Haven't made it through Level 6 yet though.
Your sounds and ambiance are very cool.

Post 57 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 07-Jul-2010 10:12:32

Version 6.8 is here. The link is, as usual, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
Fixed: the bombs now work properly again. Instead of hearing a bunch of separate death sounds all the enemies die at once now.
Added: shops can now sell you evade blades items for a medium fee.
Changed: Changed the rock sound to a rock sound. It kin of sounds like the fireball though. Listen to it as you play and tell me if it is loud enough. The only time I thought that it was too soft was once I got to level 8, and I was busy with enemies.
Changed: Your chances of getting an evade blades or an armor item have been increased. The armor is really crucial to have, as the enemies get stronger and faster and have more health each level.
Cheats: your armor doesn't go back down to the normal max if you use the armor cheat.

Post 58 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Wednesday, 07-Jul-2010 13:26:50

Making programs with it isn't bad. Oh and thanks for adding a sort of changelog to your game. :)

Post 59 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 07-Jul-2010 14:08:15

Well games was hard anyway. Margerp I have always included a list of changes, or at least a paragraph describing what I did, to the game. Anyway the new version is fun.

Post 60 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 12-Jul-2010 12:28:55

ok guys, battle zone 7.2 is here. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
Fixed: all the problems with evade blades items are hopefully gone. Also fixed the evade blades forever cheat completely, I hope.
Fixed: Now music stops when you lose your last life to a blade, before the cutscene plays. I'll fix the crackles in the next version.
Changed: you don't get extra health from enemies if your armor rating is high.
Added: shopkeeper tells you how many points you can spend in the shop.
Added: did I tell you this in a previous version but you can buy evade blades items and extra armor in the shop?
Enemies have more hp and hit harder as levels go up.

Post 61 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Monday, 12-Jul-2010 15:05:16

Battle zone 7.7 is out! The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
Warning! You will need to have bgt version 0.5 installed for the game to work. Otherwise you'll get compilation errors, so don't go crying to me that the game doesn't work. THis is a major release with a lot of bug fixes and changes!

Added: an options menu containing, well, some options, to make your game play more interesting; make sure you check this out
Faster menus. Now it just takes a tap of the enter key to start the game from the main menu. No down arrow.
Added: in options, you can now stop all the sounds while the speech synth is speaking your score, for those of you who are locked in, or like to, use serene or just plain quiet voices (I'm pointing at you, Microsoft anna)
Now, a cheat file is created after you get over 20000 points and complete a level.
New cheat to give you a lot of ammo
Level 1 is really random thanks to the bgt random generator being fixed
Toned down a lot of the anoying crackly noises in the ending sequence for blades. You will hear them still, but they are much much better (thank you wave pad!)

Would it be possible for you to implement a command to pause the game in future versions, as well as an option to save one's settings so we don't have to go into the options menu every time? Other than that, this game's awesome. love the work you've done on it so far.

Now that is a good suggestion I think.

Well I figured out why I wasn't getting speech on the main menu. For some reason the game doesn't always like Neospeech Paul. He speaks for everything but the main menu. Don't know why it's just the main menu that doesn't talk but that's what it is.

a fiew things. 1, your cheatfile can be looked at by anyone who's not stupid. look in the code!
2, rat attack had cheats sense it's first release and a cheatfile sense v1.4.
3. if your key was full, get a bigger one.
and last but not least, a bug. I have unlimited amo and shoot with like -2 or -3 amo. space-9 doesn't work.

Hey billyboy, I don't even understand you. As far as I know you're a little baby boy who claims he's 10. Come on now. I don't even know what you are saying. What do you mean, get a bigger one? What do you mean, delete the junk about your key? What do you mean, look at the code (who wants to besides a little dumdum like you!)

Battle Zone has really improved. The coughing sound does continue to play through the cut scene however, I don't know if that's design or not. It's working quite well.

Post 74 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 11:45:48

Yeah really. His comments basically made no sense whatsoever. As for the key thing he was making fun of your username.

Post 75 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 12:02:06

ok, version 8.8 is here. the link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
Added: level 11
Fixed: you can actually die in the second boss level.
Changed: potions can give you between 50 and 100 health now, instead of 35-75 health
Added: your moving gets slower and slower when your health drops below 80
Added option to turn off enemy taunt sounds when they attack you, like "burn", "attack", "great shot" etc
Added page up and page down on num pad to boss number 2 for background music volume
Corrected some outdated info in the read me file
Added: a comentedSS dot bgt file, which is a slightly older version of the game, but the first function has been completely com, mented so you can read what many of the different lines do; PM me if you don't understand it.

Why does this have to become a "my game is better" thing? Billkd, this is as stupid as "my dad can beat up your dad". Both games may be enjoyable, or some may enjoy one game and not the other. There is plenty of room for accessible games, so, why try to down someone who happens to create a game as well? I understand you may be a kid; (I haven't looked at any profiles), but if your going to write games and/or attempt to involve yourself in adult conversations, please, learn to interact more responsibly and mature. Also, if you have a criticism, please, try to make it constructive and make your comments informational. That is the only way criticism is given properly. Only when proper criticism is given can a correction be made. Also, when criticizing, try to look at the fact; (1) the software is written with a programming IDE that isn't even released out of beta; (meaning that it isn't fully functional, and, it to may still have bugs), and (2) each programming language is different. Oh Billkd, one more note. The plain and simple reason I haven't tried "Rat Attack" yet is because of your attitude. And, while it may not count for much...I do find Battle Zone enjoyable.

Post 77 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 21:06:48

OK. what are you talking about?

Post 78 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 21:11:07

and one more thing. the fool who thought I was a kid is an idiot. come on! and think logicly. one of my little cousins is 10 and is a true idiot. 10-year-olds for one know how to go on that stupid web kin or whatever it's called.

Post 79 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 21:47:57

I know you are ten. Stop trying to get out of it. Oh and take this to the discussion board or whatever. I'm not talking about people's ages in this thread. This thread is about my sidescroller, not about how you're trying to get back at everybody for constructively criticizing you. You can tell in the rant board just how much you think that webkins is the dumbest web site in the whole world, and I'll probably agree with you there, but I'm not that concerned here. Oh and what are we talking aobut? We're talking about that you just criticize everyone who tries to criticize your game. You think that everyone is trying to make bad publicity about you or something. If you look through the thread about battle zone, either on klango, or audiogames.net, or even here (though it is relatively small compared to what it is on those two venues), I took the criticism, and I tried to fix the problems that users brought up, unlike you, who, whenever people give out criticism, takes it angrily and says that everyone is an idiot (which they aren't), or you just flat out ignore it and keep on trying to tout your product. All you do is tell people that they're flat out wrong (IE, 1, I didn't make registry entries), or you just go on and say happily that rat attack version blah blah blah is out (And I added this and this in). It was only after a large user base asked you nicely for a stinkin' window for the game that you put it in. Come on, your a kid; I know kids. They're obstinate. They don't like when people tell them they are doing something incorrectly.

Post 80 by billkd (Account disabled) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 23:29:30

I was trying to tell you. if your key is full, get a bigger one as in copasity. for example, a 4GB key could be increesed to an 8 or a 16. just a thought to go invest in something larger of r better off go delete old stuff

Post 81 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 17-Jul-2010 23:43:16

No need to be rude about it. And how do you even know that's what he was talking about? You don't. He could have chosen that username just for the sheer hell of it, pardon my French. As for your game, at least KeyIsFull has tried to accomodate users' requests at least in the area of fixing problems, and without all the bitching we've heard from you. I'm sorry if this seems harsh to some but it reminds me of why I try not to come on here much.

For what it's worth, this is really quite cool. You've done a really good job; the fan doesn't speed up at all on my windows 7 test machine and I like the new sounds. I finally figured out how to use Evade Blade, now you real gaming kids can laugh at that. It's a lot of fun.

Post 87 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Monday, 19-Jul-2010 23:04:18

LOL, took me a bit to figure it out too. :) Hmm, one comment. One of two things is happening with the scoring. When it states my time bonus and then states my total it is subtracting the time bonus instead of adding it, or, it is not informing me that it is not a bonus but instead a penalty. Hmm, what is the max time you can get a bonus points addition for? I haven't been keeping track of my times for levels, but I don't think they've often exceeded 200 seconds. So, should times under 200 seconds be a bonus or a penalty? If they should be a bonus something is making the game subtract instead of adding it to total score. If you'd like next time I play the game I'll write down level score, time, time bonus and total score. If this explanation doesn't make since, let me know and I'll try to do better in explaining the problem; or what I think is a problem. :) Otherwise, great game!

Post 88 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 8:43:59

The time bonus score works like this. So you start with 300 time bonus points, plus 15 points times the level you just finished. So if you were on level 4, you'd start out with 360 points, and you will be penaltied 1 point from the time bonus each second. So if you finished the game in 104 seconds you'd only have 256 points for time bonus. This score is in turn added to your level score, which is then added to 200 times the level you just finished. The level score is then added to the total score

Post 89 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 10:59:22

Makes since, but I don't think it's doing that. Hmm, I'll have to play around with it later and see.

Post 90 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 13:56:22

Ok, here you go with stats from completing first level.

Score for this level - 1994
Time bonus - 194
Total score - 1800

Now, I checked my total score when second level began, and it was indeed 1800. So, to me, and maybe I'm wrong? But, it appears as if the time bonus is actually being subtracted from the score obtained on the level...Instead of added? If I'm confusing the scoring; (despite your explanation), I do appologize. :) Just trying to help.

Post 91 by Striker (Consider your self warned, i'm creative and offensive like handicap porn.) on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 14:08:23

I'm having issues ducking when it gets time in level 3 for the fire, any tips/tricks/advice? I'm assumeing everything works fine and its all user error as several others have compleated the game with out it being an issue. But I seem to duck at about the right time and somehow get burned anyway, when being ducked... Do you need to hold the key?

Post 92 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 20-Jul-2010 15:54:13

THey're not fireballs; they're boulders. JUmp over them. In regard to the scoring system I've fixed it. Oh and the score for this level actually includes the time bonus points. I'll check the whole score problem and make sure there are no bugs.

Well now, seems KeyWasFull has a plethora of female fighter acquaintances. As I said, very nice additions to the game

Post 94 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Wednesday, 21-Jul-2010 11:31:39

Yep, they sure are. *grins* I love it. Hmm, but I have another question. Has anyone tried the game without selecting a gender to fight? It causes a very interesting effect. You do not get any voices. That was an interesting challenge, fun but interesting. I am not complaining, I was just startled until I figured out what the problem was. And, as I said, it was fun. *grins*

Post 95 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 21-Jul-2010 15:40:04

I did not ever select a gender to fight, I'll have to look in Options to see that, I get both male and female enemies.

Post 96 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 21-Jul-2010 17:11:41

same here. Where is that option?

Post 97 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 21-Jul-2010 17:54:50

The default is male and female, but if you just press escape on the gender menu, or the sword menu for that menu you won't get any enemy voices or die sounds, or no sword sound, respectively. I will fix this problem.

Post 98 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 22-Jul-2010 0:44:30

It was quite interesting to play with no enemy sounds.

I reported this on the klango thread and it should be fixed in the next release.

to post 94, I did manage to finish the game with none of the enemy sounds.

It's quite amusing.

All you hear is the enemy drop to the ground.

Post 99 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 23-Jul-2010 14:29:51

Oh by the way, everyone , version 9.7 is out as well. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe

Added: a bunch more sound effects for females
Fixed: music won't play in boss levels if you turn the music off.
Fixed: I hope there are no more phantom items that you hear break randomly.
New: a brand new item type. It's fun. (sort of)
Fixed: you can't choose no gender in the options menu.
Fixed: you can't choose no sword sound in the options menu.

Post 100 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 24-Jul-2010 23:27:46

Personally I hope that the problems with using the NeoSpeech voices can be fixed, whether that be a BGT issue or an issue with the game itself. Though I'm not a big fan of Sapi those are two of my preferred voices.

Post 101 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 25-Jul-2010 2:46:21

I don't think it's the game itself, rather than BGT not letting you change the sapi voice.

I think I remember reading somewhere that will be addressed in the next release of BGT.

At the moment the only way to change the voice is through your control panel.

Post 104 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Sunday, 25-Jul-2010 14:32:11

Do you have to hold down the alt key, then hit backslash? That's what I've been doing, and there's no sound to indicate that the cheat has been activated.

Learned that I see now. Been used to games like Tank Commander where you try and kill everything you see. Well here we have the sword that works.

Post 109 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Sunday, 25-Jul-2010 22:27:01

No no, that's not what I was getting at. I meant you actually can't use NeoSpeech Paul or Kate with the game. Or rather you can but for some reason as of version 4 or so it wouldn't read the main menu. No idea why this is since everything else would read just fine. But the main menu isn't read. It works with other voices but that still annoys me since the NeoSpeech voices are the ones I prefer, not that I'm really a big fan of Sapi speech or synthetic speech in general.

just play the game and it'll automatically generate a cheat file in the battle zone folder under c:program files after you get 20000 points.
To the poster before last, could you please change the file format to mp3 and send it to dropbox again? I refuse to waste 700 or however many megs of my hard drive space with a game demonstration. Thank you.
The evade blades cheat stil doesn't work. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Post 128 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Thursday, 29-Jul-2010 20:12:46

Billyboy, you really don't need the full game to do a review. In fact doing a full game spoils it. It's even worse if you do it with all the cheats enabled. It doesn't show what's really interesting and challenging about the game.

Post 129 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 30-Jul-2010 20:55:05

KeyWasFull, thanks for the cheat info. I kinda don't know how to get the game since when I clicked on this topic this morning, it only showed me posts 102-128, so I don't have the post with the dropbox webpage to get the setup file for the game. Could someone please send me the link? I'd grately apreciate it. I had to uninstall it, and now I hope to kick but again. Bill how did you manage to beat Battle Zone? Besides the use of cheats, is it hard to beat?
Thanks all for help,

Everything pauses when you press the new f8 key to pause. Also read the readme file's new pausing section, for some laughs.

The learn game sounds menu has been compltely revamped! Press f3 to check it out and tell me what you think!
And yes, the game is hard enough to beat, for me, the dev, but I've done it. Billyboy here is just a little baby who can't do stand challenges.

For the one having the prob with the evade blades cheat...Make sure you can move; (level must be loaded), hold down the alt key for a second, and then while still holding the alt key down press the backslash on your keyboard. I have tried it, it works, but it has to be activated for each level that you want to use it in; which I think is the best since I do not need it in all levels. :) HTH.

Post 134 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 01-Aug-2010 10:01:20

Thanks for the new version. I'l download it and check it out. The game loves to freeze on me, maybe that's because I'm running it on Vista, for example, I hear enemies attacking me, but I can't move or anything. It's caused me to do control alt delete about 6 times now. Can anyone help me fix this bug? Poor bill, disabled his account because of us... I feel kinda bad for him.
Anyway, thanks for the awesome game.
Matthew

Post 135 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Monday, 02-Aug-2010 8:46:32

You have to completely unload JAWS or whatever screen reader you're using in order to move. I'm running it on a computer that has windows Vista and it works just fine.

Post 136 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Tuesday, 03-Aug-2010 11:00:21

I always unload jfw, it's because I sometimes click the mouse when moving. I meant that in level 2, I hear a motorcycle, jump, hear the woosh of me jumping, but land on top of it. I timed everything just right. Then, the game freezes so I am forced to do control alt delete. I don't know why it happens. Do any of you know any other cheats besides alt backslash?

Any new updates on the game yet?

Post 142 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 10-Aug-2010 19:59:27

I'm goingto be making a 10.2 soon.

Post 143 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Tuesday, 10-Aug-2010 20:49:21

You need to remember to put this on your resume, especially with it being open source any future instructor or employer could look at it and see what you can do, irregardless of the fact it's a game. Then you'd reap some benefit. Just sayin'!

Post 144 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 10-Aug-2010 22:30:55

indeed. I should. I am going to try and get into m i t.

Post 148 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Thursday, 19-Aug-2010 11:31:08

Would someone please PM me the cheats? The game says that I have unlocked them, but they have yet to show up. I'm now on level 11 and have done pretty good without them, but I'd like to know what they are should I decide to play again. Plus, they may come in handy for this level. It's a pretty challenging level.

Post 149 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Thursday, 19-Aug-2010 17:17:54

go under the battle zone directory. There's a file in there called cheats.txt

Post 150 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 20-Aug-2010 12:51:47

No go. It's not showing up anywhere. I could really use it, too. I'm on level 12 and am not getting anywhere.

Post 151 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 20-Aug-2010 19:28:14

I take it you meant level eleven? there isn't a level twelve yet.

Post 152 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 21-Aug-2010 4:15:54

oh, I forgot to tell you that a new version was released with level 12 in it.

Post 153 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 21-Aug-2010 5:55:56

battle zone 11 is out! Link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
added: ability to save your options. It's in the options menu.
Added: reality mode (the readme has the scoop on it)
added: cut scene for the fire boss!
Added: level 13!

Post 154 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Saturday, 21-Aug-2010 10:38:41

It doesn't appear that I'm going to get anywhere past level 12. It's a good game, though. I like it. Thanks for sharing.

Post 155 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 23-Aug-2010 3:22:45

the link for the new version of battle zone is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe
I optimized the game to make it faster and more effecient. Tell me if you notice any difference. I have a pretty fast PC so I didn't notice much difference but slower systems may see a change.
Fixed: the coughing sound pauses when you press the f8 key.
Police cars have been toned down a bit. Thy only do between 15 and 30 damage to you now.

Post 156 by BlindTechsNet (Veteran Zoner) on Monday, 23-Aug-2010 16:18:16

its unfortunet you depend on sapi for self voicing of this game, especially when audio files could have been used for menu options.

I say this because my sapi system has been wonky for a while and no matter how many times I reinstall sapi5.1 I have no functioning sapi on your system and your game refuses to load much less speak on my windows xp sp3 machine.

Post 157 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Tuesday, 24-Aug-2010 8:26:56

An awesome game. Why are the footstep sounds in level 12 so hard to hear and quiet? Sorry KeyWasFull, I didn't mean to think your name is Jamie, it's that in Glago and Demise it states that Jamie has killed you, so I assumed that that was your name. Peter is polish eh? He sounded kinda chineese to me, but I think I have my accents messed up. The cheats are so awesome!
Matthew

Post 158 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Tuesday, 24-Aug-2010 13:09:24

I think the footsteps in level twelve indicate the character is walking through muddy puddles. oh wait, that's level thirteen. sorry.

Post 159 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Tuesday, 24-Aug-2010 17:00:48

level 12 is a street and is quiet because you are wearing shoes.

Post 160 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Wednesday, 25-Aug-2010 14:19:39

Bill was just mad because his rat game was poorly done.

Post 161 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Thursday, 26-Aug-2010 15:54:40

My computer slows down at the beginning of level eleven. I don't get it ...

Post 162 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 06-Sep-2010 22:28:41

I had battle zone on my laptop until something happened to my tts. Now, when I start battle zone, you will not hear tts. Same thing with all my other games (Kitchensinc, bg series, etc.)

Post 163 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 25-Sep-2010 9:56:08

That's why if I can help it I won't be using much Sapi in my games or, at the least not as the default option.

Post 164 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 26-Sep-2010 20:39:34

It's a good idea, but I've linked my loss of speech with the installation of a tts program that wasn't supported or something like that.

Post 165 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 30-Sep-2010 15:15:12

Well that's the whole problem right there. It's so easy for average computer users to break their SAPI without ever meaning to or being aware of it until they need it for something.

Post 166 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 30-Sep-2010 17:48:12

Yeah, it's like sapi is made of glass. The touch of a button, and you're stuck with one default voice you can't change, or in my case, no voice at all. I'll use recorded prompts when I ever create my game, if I don't get a million errors.

Post 167 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Friday, 01-Oct-2010 18:45:10

I'm the same way. It might make the games larger in terms of download and install size and whatnot but it's more sure to work than Sapi seeing as how easy Sapi is to break accidentally. And sometimes even that Deluserlex file doesn't fix the problem. It does for most things granted but not all.

Post 168 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 01-Oct-2010 19:25:37

I don't even know whether or not it works because my computer shows it as a virus and deletes it if it sees it anywhere. Better yet, I can't turn off my virus protection software for a minute.

Post 169 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 02-Oct-2010 11:12:17

Damn. Craziness. I have heard of that happening though.

Post 170 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 02-Oct-2010 12:47:42

what virus protection program do you use?

Post 171 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 02-Oct-2010 17:13:21

on-access scan satistics or something like that. I didn't put it there, so I'm not exactly sure.

Post 172 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 02-Oct-2010 17:16:26

Sounds like Macafee Enterprise edition

Post 173 by Knaught_JDD (Newborn Zoner) on Monday, 18-Oct-2010 22:33:29

I just discovered this topic yesterday.

keyWasFull:
Thank you so much for the awesome game.
And my discovering how you use
sounds.items[int var].handle.volume
to change the sound_pool item volume after using sound_pool_object.play_stationary
is quite a sanity saver for my personal ambience project.

Thank you so much.

Post 174 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 22-Oct-2010 13:42:21

Open your scanner and put the program in it's allowed list of programs so it won't think it is a harmful program.

Post 175 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 22-Oct-2010 17:07:57

I'm trying, but it doesn't show up under programs. It only shows up when I try downloading the file, and then it deletes it and confuses IE.

Post 176 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 23-Oct-2010 13:51:59

try saving it instead of running it

Post 177 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 14-Nov-2010 1:14:30

OK guys, battle zone 12.6 has finally been released. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8252087/battle%20zone/setup.exe

Added: In the options menu, you can choose to play a mod. Currently there are only 2 choices available, the normal sounds and the sounds from peter mahach, but if someone wants to create a mod I can easily add it in now, and no need to rename the folder!
Added: readme file in the start menu.
Fix: important improvements have been made to autopilot. Now, the autoiplot will not die nearly as much by jumping into blades, and he can duck the moving fireballs.

Post 178 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 18-Nov-2010 21:37:37

Well I've gotta say just got t the latest version haven't bothered to update BGT or take more than a cursory look at the code, but gotta say, you've done a terrific job.
I put it on Autopilot once and now I know what it's like when you all play it ... lol I'm still slow with games.

Post 179 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 19-Nov-2010 15:59:50

chuckles.

Post 180 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 20-Nov-2010 16:51:56

No, that's not like the way I play. I wait a whole lot more time at the blades, and can't shoot even a quarter of that speed. Wonder how it fares with police cars? It'd be interesting to see it. Anyway, I've beaten the game with no cheats, finally! Took a while, and I couldn't check my health near the end because of the tts failure, but I managed it. Wonderful job!
I also have a suggestion. for advanced arson and I just want to die difficulty, having the armor piercing shells from the police cars actually subtract one armor. What do you think?

Post 181 by keyWasFull (Zone BBS Addict) on Saturday, 20-Nov-2010 17:57:59

hmm, that could really add up, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

Post 182 by mat the musician (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Sunday, 21-Nov-2010 8:12:13

Another suggestion, is it possible to not only have police cars, but other traps of various sorts?

Post 183 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 21-Nov-2010 18:22:20

There are already those, pits, blades, cyclers, bolders, and fireballs.

Post 184 by synthesizer101 (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 11-Dec-2010 21:08:27

Hey key was full:
How would I create files like cheat files only under certain conditions?
Also, where did you get your stepping sounds. I'm trying to find some, but there doesn't seem to be a easy place to find them. Thanks.
